BREWER, Mrs Joan, AM, FACE

Adelaide-born Joan Holland was educated at Loreto College and completed her initial training at Adelaide Teachers College and The University of Adelaide. She then taught at Naracoorte High School, but later changed direction by becoming a librarian, firstly with the Barr Smith Library at The University of Adelaide, and later in London, only to return to Adelaide and to the new Wattle Park teachers College as Lecturer-Librarian. She became the Women’s Warden at Western Teachers College, but had to resign on her marriage! Later she returned as a Temporary Acting Assistant Lecturer, and after 14 years, and a change of government policy, she was promoted to Principal Lecturer. Joan Brewer’s major achievements have been in her work with teacher-librarians and for her involvement with the Libraries Board of South Australia. From 1986 to 1990, she was a member of the Federal Government’s National Women’s Advisory Council. At the time of this interview, she continued her strong involvement with Catholic Education in South Australia, including as chair of the Loreto School Council.

CANAVAN, Brother Kelvin

Brother Kelvin Canavan taught for many years in Marist Schools in NSW, beginning in Parramatta in 1960, and becoming principal of Eastwood School in 1967. He gained his BA from The University of Sydney, MSc from Cornell University and PhD in Education at The University of San Francisco in 1986. He became Director of Primary Schools in Sydney in 1975 and Executive Director in 1987. He has published extensively with more than 80 articles and papers to his credit. Much of his work has been in media and its effects on children. He is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators and was awarded the Sir Harold Wyndham Medal in 1994 by the NSW Branch of the College.

DAVIS, Dr Betty, AM, FACE

Dr Betty Davis has had a long and distinguished career in early childhood education in South Australia. Following her early years as a teacher and then as a director in several Kindergartens in and around Adelaide, and a time in Perth, she was employed by the Kindergarten Union of SA, and then lectured in education at the Kindergarten Training College. From 1957, as Principal of the Kindergarten Teachers College, Betty Davis was actively involved in the establishment of the Kingston College of Advanced Education. In addition to holding an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia, Dr Betty Davis is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators, and a Member of the Order of Australia.

HUGHES, Miss Dorothy

Born in Perth, from 1948 to 1970 Dorothy Hughes was General Secretary of the Kindergarten Union of South Australia, an organisation that owes much to the foresight and dynamism of the legendary Lillian de Lissa. The first Kindergarten in Adelaide was established in Franklin Street in 1906. During Miss Hughes’ time as General Secretary, great changes were taking place in the training of kindergarten teachers in South Australia, with the Adelaide Kindergarten Training College changing its name in 1967 to the Adelaide Kindergarten Teachers College (and in 1974, to the Kingston College of Advanced Education) . In this interview, Dorothy Hughes speaks of the return to Adelaide in 1955 of Lillian de Lissa for the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Kindergarten Union of SA. The Dorothy Hughes Kindergarten in Salisbury North, established with Dorothy’s assistance in 1966, is named in her honour.

McDONALD, Mr John, AM, FACE

John’s education began at St Joseph’s Kingswood and continued at Loxton Area School and Rostrevor College. At The University of Adelaide, he successfully completed his BSc, whilst taking a keen interest in University affairs, playing football and tennis. His first teaching appointment, in 1960, was to Norwood High School as a teacher of Mathematics. He was promoted to Senior Maths Master in 1964 and to consultant in Secondary Mathematics in 1968. In 1971, John moved into the SA Catholic Education System, as Coordinator of Secondary Education and in 1972 he became Director of Catholic Education, a position he held until his retirement in 1993. John contributed to education through his active participation on many significant education committees, both National and State, and for a two year period he was chancellor of the University of South Australia.

STEINLE, Mr John, AM, FACE

John Steinle undertook his teacher training at Adelaide Teachers College, then taught in SA primary and secondary schools from 1951, becoming Inspector of Secondary Schools in 1966. In 1971, he worked in the Northern Territory as Director of Education, before returning to Adelaide as Deputy Director General of Education. He was Director General of Education from 1977 to 1988. John Steinle has chaired several major reviews of education, was a member of the Commonwealth Schools Commission, and of the Australian Education Council. He has led several delegations, for UNESCO and OECD. He has published widely in the area of educational administration, research and curriculum development.
