Instituted in 2006 by the Darling Downs Regional Group of the Australian College of Educators, the biennial Sam Power Oration commemorates the life and work of former teacher, colleague and Regional Group Executive Committee Secretary, Sandra 'Sam' Power, who passed away on 31 January 2004.

The Darling Downs Regions invites members and guests to attend this special occasion.

The evening will commence with a networking session, drinks and finger food at 5.00pm.

The 2010 Sam Power Oration presented by Dr Leanne Dalley-Trim, James Cook University is entitled The Gender Agenda: The Journey Travelled and the Road Ahead.

This presentation will address gender as a contested issue of on-going critical relevance to education and schooling in Australia as elsewhere. It will revisit where we've come from and where we are headed to - such as the title suggests. While sequential in terms of historical development, the developments in gender represent a story still being told and retold, written and rewritten over, of episodes done and yet continuing. The presentation will draw upon current research data to demonstrate the ways in which young people, in imagining their futures, come to view the influence of gender upon the construction of the narratives of their lives and the implications of such imaginings for educators.

Dr Leanne Dalley-Trim is a senior Lecturer in the School of Education, James Cook University (Townsville), where she lectures in a range of subjects in the areas of language and literacies education and secondary school education. She currently holds the position of Director of Professional Experience and Community Engagement - a role that sees her actively engaged in schooling contexts. Leanne's research and publications encompass the fields of gender and education; gender and Generation Y in neoliberal times; masculinity, literacy and school practice; students' future aspirations, and rural education. She has worked as a consultant and staff trainer in schools across Australia and is currently the tertiary representative on the Queensland Studies Authority's State English Panel and a member of the Queensland College of Teachers' Professional Standards Committee. Prior to commencing work as an academic at James Cook University, Leanne was a secondary school teacher and Head of Department (English),

The evening will also include presentation of this year's Sam Power Award to Jill Temple, Middle Ridge State School.

Following the oration guests may then choose to join the guest speaker and other members at an optional dinner following the oration (Grammar View Restaurant, Margaret Street, Toowoomba, 6.30 for 7.00pm ). Please note that the dinner is not included in the oration ticket price and individuals who attend the dinner will be responsible for ordering and paying for their own meal.

All attendees must register online through the ACE website to attend the Sam Power Oration. No registrations will be accepted at the door. Payments can be made online via either credit card or cheque.
