The Blue Mountains Region invites members and guests to:

The Education Revolution - the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly -

And the Possible

Margaret Clark, Chief Executive Office, ACE

As one of the Northern Territory participants in the Council of Australian Governments  (COAG) Productivity Agenda Working Group (PAWG), Margaret was a first hand witness and at a times an active participant in the negotiations of the different elements of what has become known as The Education Revolution.  Margaret will provide a first-hand account of its unfolding and the political happenings behind the scenes.

This will provide a broader context for looking at the issues unleashed in response to the myschool website.  This website has the potential to create damage in terms of increasing the exodus from Government schools, thus further concentrating low SES communities in residualised schools and damage from increased pressure on teachers to teach to the test.

The question for educators, caught up in this unstoppable political reality is how can we use the language and principles of transparency and accountability agenda to fight back: to insist that this is not just about school outcomes, but about the quality of school provision; to promote a right based agenda as a framework for dealing with the deplorably high correlation between poverty and educational outcomes; and to clarify who is accountable and what needs to be done.

The myschool website for all its flaws offers an unprecedented opportunity to articulate a new set of metrics and new set of standards for school transparency and system accountability around the vision of equal access to high quality schools.Monday 29 March 2010
