Annual Phillip Hughes Oration & Dinner

Dear members,

The 2011 Phillip Hughes Oration will be delivered by Professor Alan Reid from the University of South Australia next Monday. Alan will base his Oration on issue of equity in education, a current theme being developed by the Australian College of Educators nationally.

The pursuit of equity in and through education is a proclaimed goal of the Australian government's national education agenda for schooling. This lecture will critically analyse that agenda, assessing it against its equity aspirations. The lecture will conclude by proposing alternative approaches designed to achieve more equitable educational outcomes.

The Oration honors Professor Emeritus Phillip Hughes who passed away in October. Professor Hughes was active and influential as an educator and an education administrator. He played a significant role in education in the ACT and was a great friend and fellow of the ACT Chapter of ACE.  
 
Professor Hughes' contribution was recognised through many fellowships and awards including the Order of Australia in 1991, Gold Medal of the Australian Council for Educational Administration, 2002 Medal of the Australian College of Educators and the 2008 UNESCO Comenius Medal for lifetime services to education. In 2003 the Australian College of Education established The Phillip Hughes Oration in the ACT, and in 2011 he was awarded Life Membership of the Australian Council for Educational Leadership.

 2011 Phillip Hughes Oration presented by Professor Alan Reid

The Oration will commence with informal gathering and registration in the Great Hall foyer of University House ANU where drinks and canapés will be served until 6.30 pm.
The formal ceremony will follow in the Great Hall.

This will include the presentation of:
*Life Membership
*25 year Memberships
*10 year membership certificates and badges
*A special tribute will be given honouring the life and achievements of Emeritus Professor Hughes.
*ACE 2011 fellowships will be presented.

The Oration will then be presented by Alan Reid, Professor of Education at the University of South Australia. His research and publications focus on the broad themes of education policy, curriculum, the history and politics of public education, social justice and education, teachers’ work, and citizenship education.

Guests will either leave or remain for the buffet dinner. Proceedings will conclude by 10.00 pm
