Dear ACE member ,

On behalf of the Wesley College Institute for Innovation in Education, Melbourne, Australia in cooperation with the International Baccalaureate and the Australian College of Educators I am most delighted to inform you of the upcoming 2010 Global Language Convention Many Cultures, One Community: Language, Knowing and Power to be held in Melbourne, Australia.

Since its inception in April 2006 the biennial Global Language Convention has brought together language experts, educators, practitioners and policy makers from around the world in dialogue and critical engagement with the ever growing body of knowledge in the area of language and learning.

The first convention was hosted by the IB Asia Pacific Regional Office in Singapore. The Centre for the Advancement of Studies in International Education (CASIE) hosted the second convention in 2008 in Atlanta. As its next host, the Wesley College Institute proudly welcomes the 2010 convention, the 3rd in the series, to Melbourne, Australia from 8 - 11 April 2010 under the theme "Many Cultures, One Community: Language, Knowing and Power".  The seven strands within the convention topic are:

2.    Language Loss & Reclamation - Critical Perspectives

3.    Taking responsibility for the 2nd Language Learner in the Mainstream Language Environment - challenges, issues and trends in additional language provision and support in the school context

4.    The Brain, Learning & Language - traversing the journey from myth to policy implementation

5.    Multilingual matters - beyond making the case for learning more than one language

6.    Defining, Developing, Refining, Maintaining the Mother Tongue

7.    "Every teacher is a language teacher" - critical issues in managing language & learning in schools
