College Archives

Holding some 200 boxes of minutes, reports, publications and oral history recordings from across Australia, and with a comprehensive database of over 2500 entries to facilitate researchers locate relevant records, the College Archives now provide a centralised repository for our collection of historical records, dating from 1958 when first moves were made in Victoria to form an “institute of teachers”.

Located in the Adelaide suburb of Bowden in a leased area of the purpose-built National Archives building of the Lutheran Church of Australia, the College Archives now provide a service to members and to other bona fide educators and researchers. Enquiries are very welcome.

College members visiting Adelaide are invited to contact the Archivist and arrange a visit. While access is possible during working hours during the week (with the exception of Wednesdays), appointments are always necessary.

Structure

The College Archives collection consists of a unique gathering of minutes, reports, publications, correspondence audio recordings, project data, conference proceedings and other records since the foundation of the College in May 1959. The search to locate records, and the subsequent despatch to Adelaide, and the sorting, culling and accessioning of valuable College resources from around Austral commenced in 2002. Initial work was done in consultation with archivists - from the University of Adelaide and from the Australian Society of Archivists – their assistance is greatly appreciated.

The database is evolving as new material is entered, and the various categories are further refined - currently there are over 2500 entries in the College Archives database. Whilst not perfect, it does provide users with quite reasonable access to a range of archival material, from National Office and from all eight branches and the many regional groups, currently gathered and in safe storage within the Lutheran Archives building in the Adelaide suburb of Bowden.
