Associate Professor Gerry Turcotte is a well-known, published novelist and Head of the English Studies Program at the University of Wollongong. Dr Adrian George is Director of First Year Studies in the School of Chemistry. Students and staff alike attest to Dr Georgeís outstanding abilities as a teacher. His approach to teaching is enthusiastic and joyful and is based on his great depth and breadth of knowledge in his field.
Dr Colin Bale
Colin is a teacher of Biological Sciences at Armidale TAFE where he teaches ecology, botany and interpretive aspects of ecotourism and guiding. He is also a Research Associate at the University of New England where he studies the habitat preferences of the endangered Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby in Western NSW, the ecology of ancient Antarctic Beech trees, and the cycling of nitrogen in forests of the east coast. Colin believes teaching and learning should be ìserious funî. He encourages students to ask ìhow comeî, and to develop a sense of wonder about the world around them.
Dr Leonora Ritter
Dr Leonora Ritter, from the School of Social Science and Liberal Studies at Charles Sturt University, is acclaimed as an innovator in the classroom who is always there for her students. Her pioneering work on computer simulation combined with her wealth of knowledge in the discipline of History has enabled her to produce first class, effective, teaching strategies.
Dr Michael Harrap
Dr Michael is senior lecturer in the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the Australian Defence Academy (ADFA) at the University of NSW. He is a thorough professional with the ability to make difficult and abstract topics interesting, meaningful and real to his students. He actively involves his students in the development of teaching resources ñ in particular the video series he initiated and designed to teach the principles of flight.

Alison is a highly organised, confident and committed teacher. She has a sincere motivation to provide quality learning experiences for the children in her care. Alison has been instrumental in introducing new programs and procedures to her school and leading in their implementation. Mr Dallas Sutherland
Dallas teaches Arts and Media at the Institute. He finds teaching extremely demanding, but at the same time challenging and rewarding. He can think of no greater satisfaction than witnessing the blossoming of self-confidence and the sense of professionalism that students find within themselves at the completion of a course of study in fine arts.
Mr David Wilson
David is the Head Teacher of Clinical Technology at OTEN, managing and teaching in the optical dispensing and optical mechanics courses (58 students across Australia and New Zealand). He has written a textbook on optical dispensing and is in the process of writing a second one to be published in 2002. He has lectured in a number of countries including the US, England, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, China, Australia and New Zealand. He is full of enthusiasm, cares for his students, and shares his expertise.
Mr James Browning
James has been teaching since 1979. He is interested in student welfare and is involved in a wide range of co-curricula activities. The focus of his career has always been Civics and Citizenship education. He is a very active member of his profession. In 1999 he was a member of the Bathurst Delegation to Wales and one of the major outcomes of this visit was an international civics and citizenship link between a comprehensive High School in Wales and Kelso High School.
Mr Leslie Quick
Leslie Quick is well respected in the school and local community. On the strength of his unique relationship with students that provides learning for life through his passionate commitment for his subject (Visual Arts), he is an excellent teacher and provides a model environment for teaching and learning. He has a strong network of colleagues, prominent in the Art Education Society and runs various in-service programs for teachers.
Mr Neil Rogers
Neil has been teaching since 1984 and has also taught in London. He is the Assistant Principal at the school. Neil believes he has learned a great deal from his colleagues and he has benefited from their experience and perspective. He finds teaching demanding but also very rewarding and asserts that this Award is a wonderful bonus. His colleagues describe Mr Rogers as a ìcalming team playerî and cited the outstanding quality of the variety of programs he introduces, organises and implements through staff meeting presentations.
Mr Robert Schouten Port
Robert works with students who have severely disordered behaviour problems. His credo is ìIím going to make a difference to this kid, whatever it takes and no matter how long it takesî. He is able to point to tangible results to prove it. His colleagues and his students, their parents and the broader community acknowledge his higher order skills and what a brilliant teacher he is: he transforms the lives of students who have been emotionally damaged and disordered. Robert stands between success and continued failure in life for many K-12 students in Port Macquarie.
Mr Rodney Morrison
Rodney is a teacher of Mathematics at the school. He attributes his studentsí success to keeping his classes fun and interesting, yet challenging. He uses a holistic approach in the teaching of Mathematics, so that students understand the relevance of mathematical problems in the real world. He always puts his studentsí interests and education first and firmly believes that a good role model is essential to ensure success. He feels that he could not have chosen a more rewarding career than teaching.
Mr Steven Bennett
Steven is the Special Education Head Teacher at the school. He has had a wide range of teaching experiences across all areas of the curriculum in both private and government schools. Steve says one of his strengths as a teacher is enthusiasm. ìI love teaching. I love the classroom. I take teaching seriously - the planning, administration, leadership. I strive to create a happy and safe environment. Mrs Beverley Sampford
Beverley is a teacher of science and computer programming at the school. She finds teaching extremely stimulating and enjoys the challenge of finding strategies to help all students achieve success. Mrs Bronwyn Saunders
Bronwyn teaches a K/1/2 composite class at Wallabadah Public School which is in the Tamworth District of the North West. Bronwyn believes that all children can achieve success at a high level given the appropriate environment and support. This underpins every facet of Bronwynís teaching methodology. Her students, past and present, are a testament to this belief. Bronwyn ìis determined that no one will slip through and that she will make a difference to all her studentsî (District Superintendent).
Mrs Cheralyn Halpin
Cheralyn Halpin has taught at Yeshiva College for the past 12 years and has been the Infants Coordinator for the past 3 years. The religious tenet practised in this community is one of ìkindness to othersî. Her Principal says that she personifies this ethos in all she does within the school, even though she is not a Jewish adherent. Her beginning students are encouraged, supported, and provided with appropriate supports, leading them to enjoy and learn from every school experience.
Mrs Christine Easther
Christine is a classroom teacher with very extensive teaching experience. She has enjoyed ìevery moment of itî and has a passion for the Performing Arts. Mrs Easther fosters co-operative group learning and strongly promotes student involvement in tracking and being responsible for their own learning. She has worked closely with children in the area of Choir, Dance and Band. She reports that this involvement has given her the same sense of enjoyment and lasting memories as the children.
Mrs Daphne Flax
Daphne is Creative Arts Coordinator at Masada College. She has a strong intellectual and practical background in her field that provides the basis for her outstanding teaching. Senior students about to sit for the new HSC in 2001 said that they felt very comfortable and confident. They attributed their confidence to the positive learning environment and teamwork in the Creative Arts department of the school.
Mrs Daphne Gonzalvez
Daphne teaches in the Sydney Distance Education Centre. She has created a web presence for her school, developed interest lessons, teamed up with enthusiastic colleagues and promoted a global classroom. Taking the example of the information superhighway, she says that adrenalin is like petrol in the tank. One of the assessorís commented that Daphneís ìfoot is on the accelerator, the wind is in her hair and speed is in her blood! To-morrow is an exciting country and her students and she will get there.
Mrs Deborah Arthurs
Deborah is a pre-school teacher who claims to be very proudly both a result and an advocate of public education. She believes her very first teacher became a very important role model for her and that she embodied everything Deborah wanted to become. Equally she was influenced by her Year 6 teacher who demonstrated that learning was ìan adventureÖa challengeÖa joy,î and she embraced his philosophies. When considering the needs and interests of students, Deborah uses a well developed holistic approach. She also enjoys high credibility in the school community.
Mrs Deborah Holbrook
Deborah has been teaching for 13 years and is currently teaching a Kindergarten class. She has a vivid interest in Gifted and Talented students Science and Creative Arts, particularly Visual Arts. She involves her students in local and international exhibitions and has instigated a Marathon Artwork on the walkways, in chalk, to celebrate the Olympics. She spontaneously mentors beginning teachers and ìother teachers in the school to take risks in lesson presentation, because of the self-confidence Debbie has instilled in them.
Mrs Deborah York
Deborah is a teacher of Science and Agriculture at the school. Being in a closely-knit small rural community, Deborah tries to provide important opportunities for her students to develop their skills in all areas but particularly in the agricultural area. Her school life extends into that of the broader local community, but feels that this is a positive as it helps her students to see her as a ìreal personî and not just in the classroom. She is trusted, respected and seen as a team player by staff, students, parents and community representatives.
Mrs Elizabeth Hobbs
Elizabeth teaches Administration in the business services training division at Baulkham Hills College of TAFE. She developed a particular interest in developing resources that were paper based and computer based, and tailored them to individual student needs. She wrote a textbook, computer based learning programs and curriculum documents. She values creating an open and friendly learning environment that is both engaging and challenging for the students and herself, and she enjoys to be involved in teams that are both within the college, across the institute and also between institutes.
Mrs Jeanette Brady
Jeanette is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and is often the first link between the home of the newly arrived NESB student and their first Australian school. Parents have indicated that the learning success that their children experienced were a result of the individualised introduction to English literacy lessons that Mrs Brady provides each student. She actively promotes multicultural activities and has been used as a model teacher for teachers training to be ESL teachers.
Mrs Kerry Barker
Kerry teaches music across the primary sector at the school, but she tries to create opportunities for students in all KLAs. She is particularly skilled at extending students in the area of music and creates opportunities such as eisteddfods, Schools Spectaculars, Opera House Concerts, Opening Ceremonies of Pacific Games, Paralympics and Olympics. She finds teaching challenging and very rewarding.

Linda Cassidy demonstrates a mastery of content and understanding of the syllabus outcomes in all aspects of her well -planned and structured lessons. She welcomes a high level of parent involvement. She employs cooperative learning techniques to assist student learning through team building within a climate of mutual respect. Linda is a reflective practitioner exemplifying the qualities we seek to inspire in our students.
Mrs Lorna DeCean
Lorna is an executive teacher. She is very experienced, having started her teaching career in 1972. She particularly enjoys teaching Kindergarten children. She is passionate about teaching and she is committed to taking the children as far as they can go. Mrs De Ceanís classroom is rich in literature, vibrant, fun, musical, dynamic, with a focus on student learning and celebrating success. She finds that having been at the school for a lengthy period has enabled her to build positive relations with families and to become a valued community member.
Mrs Lyn Howie
Lyn is very proud of her public education background. She has had wide experience in a variety of schools and is currently the Learning Difficulties Co-ordinator for the Lismore District. She uses peer tutoring and parent training programs to support her work. ìIf it were not for Lyn, I donít know where my child would be at nowÖî (Parent). ìÖ. With Mrs Howie you donít mind if you go in at the bottom because she makes sure you come out at the top.îÖ(Year 6 student.) She was nominated for the award by the staff and community of Alstonville Primary School where she is a support teacher, Learning Difficulties.
Mrs Marian Bell
Marian is Year 3 teacher and Religious Education Coordinator at the school. Parents have described her as a ìteacher of teachersî, capable of meeting the full range of abilities of a Primary aged child. One of her ex-students expressed the opinion that she ìcauses us to believe in ourselves and that makes us what we are today ñ she moulds you as a personî.
Mrs Nicola Sleeman
Nicola teaches Retail and Logistics at Tamworth Campus of TAFE. Part-time teaching at TAFE led to a total commitment to education and led to her departure from full-time work in Retail to full time teaching. During this time she has had significant development opportunities and has gained a string of qualifications ñ she is currently completing a Master of Marketing with Monash University. She is heavily involved in the development and delivery of Retail flexible learning materials to indigenous and non-indigenous students located throughout the State and Yr 11 and 12 students undertaking Retail studies utilising the Internet as part of their HSC.
Mrs Noella Mackenzie
Noella is working as a reading recovery tutor for the Albury District. Noella has a strong commitment to early intervention and the provision of high quality ongoing professional development to teachers. She very much enjoys being a teacher and a learner. She sets challenging, yet achievable standards for her Reading Recovery students and trainees. She believes that throughout her career she has been privileged to learn from students, colleagues and educational leaders in a variety of settings. In the year 2000, she decided to undertake doctoral studies.
Mrs Sheilah Jackson
Sheilah is an effective, dynamic science teacher who is valued and respected by students, parents and colleagues alike. She sets high standards for herself and her students and has shown total support for the ethos of the school where she has been happy in her job as a teacher for 15 years.
Mrs Vicki McHenry Bredin
Vicki McHenry Bredinís classroom is vibrant, entertaining, stimulating, a focus of student learning experiences. Parents, staff and students (past and present) describe her as an enthusiastic, creative and passionate teacher who never slows down. She was instrumental in developing and engaging all students and school community members in becoming environmentally aware in developing an extensive recycling program.
Mrs Vicki Treble
Before being appointed to the current school, Vicky spent 8 years teaching at North Sydney Demonstration School. She has maintained very high professional standards in teaching and her excellence in teaching has been recognised by being nominated 4 times for the National Education in Teaching Award. Mrs Treble is a teacher who ìprotects the spirit of each child within the ardousness of the learning task.î Parents become deeply moved when trying to find ways to describe the depth of impact her teaching has had on their child. She now very much looks forward to her new position as Assistant Principal at Gordon East Public School beginning in 2002.
Ms Carolyn White
Carolyn is a teacher of general education at the institute. She has taught Science, Information Technology and pre-vocational areas and she has particularly enjoyed her involvement in co-ordinating and teaching programs for youth at risk. Gailís biggest satisfaction as an educator is the fact that students participating in the youth programs are achieving good results and are continuing their education, having developed a more positive attitude to education and the role it can play in their lives.
Ms Catherine Hamill
Catherine is Head Teacher of the Child Studies Section of Crows Nest College, which is part of the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE. She believes that when working with children there needs to be ìjoyî in the process of discovering the possibilities of children in their early years. One of her aims has been to evoke that passion within students training to be childcare professionals and her colleagues within the TAFE sector. Her classroom clearly demonstrates special attention to students from very diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Ms Christine Podmore
Christine teachers English at the school. She feels that the key to encouraging and managing students is a mixture of tolerance, commitment, flexibility and humour. Her most formative experiences outside the classroom made her more acutely aware of the vulnerability of parents ñ their dreams and disappointments in particular. She believes that teaching is essentially valuing humanity. This explains why the classroom remains her professional passion.
Ms Christine Preston
Christine Preston is an accomplished teacher of K-12 Science. She has had a wide variety of teaching experiences in government high schools and at tertiary level. In preparing future K-6 teachers in the key learning area of Science and Technology at Macquarie University, she has developed a very effective methodology of interactive teaching. That is, she models teaching strategies rather than delivers lectures. Her colleagues and students regard her as ìoutstandingî and ìexceptionalî.
Ms Debra Anderson
Accounting and Finance is Debraís teaching field. She believes she is fortunate and privileged to be a member of a professional team that includes full-time and part-time teachers, Head Teachers, College and Institute Executives committed to quality. They inspire her and provide her with notable role models. She states that her rewards in teaching are reinforced every day in observing her studentsí excitement and development, and in the knowledge that she has contributed to this. The portfolios she helps students prepare frequently result in successful employment outcomes for them.
Ms Eileen Pui Yee Chau
Eileen teaches English within the AMES service. Her strength as a teaching professional lies in her love of learning and believes that commitment to teaching is also a commitment to learning. She has learned much from her colleagues through team-based projects. She is committed to improving the English skills of migrants and refugees as she sees this as the key to their successful settlement.
Ms Elaine Hankin
Elaine teaches Kindergarten at the school. She has had wide experience in a variety of NSW schools. She has been a teacher librarian, a reading recovery teacher, a support teacher learning difficulties and a district literacy consultant. Her experience as a teacher librarian has enhanced her passion for the teaching of literary strands of the syllabus. She establishes high expectations of children, regardless of their background, and she maximises collegial expertise and greatly contributes to the professional development of others.
Ms Frances Gibson
Frances Gibson is senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law and Director of the Kingsford Legal Centre. She performs outstandingly well in the various phases of her role in which she has to balance the needs of the Centreís clients and the teamís professional responsibility to them, with her role in facilitating the development of understanding and skills in students. She shows remarkable sensitivity and responsiveness to students as individuals and in-group situations demonstrating empathy, support and challenge.
Ms Gail Smith
Gail teaches Office Administration at the Riverina Institute Finley Campus. Gail is the only full time teacher at the campus, and there are about 12 part-time teachers. In a small town like Finley it would be difficult to keep classes full year after year. But Gail has adapted curriculum to meet the needs of local industry and students and has maintained a healthy section. She is committed to sharing with colleagues. Local industry calls on her when they have vacancies because of the high quality graduates. She is thrilled to have received this award since she believes it is important for teachers of a small campus such as Finley and Deniliquin to be recognised for their achievements.
Ms Jeanette Rothapfel
Jeanette is Head Teacher Science at the school. Jeanetteís passion for Science education has been rewarded by being invited as a guest of NASA astronaut Dr Andrew Thomas to attend the launches of his space shuttle missions. Jeanette was selected as the ìAustralian Educatorî to represent Australia at the International Space camp in Alabama in 1993 and was Principal of the Australian International Space School 1993-99. In the words of one of the parents in the schoolÖ.îshe is just a brilliant teacher!î
Ms Jennifer Lawless
Jennifer Lawless is associate lecturer in the School of social Ecology and Lifelong Learning. She embodies the ideal of the scholar-teacher. She not only loves history and has a comprehensive grasp of the intellectual content of the discipline: she is an historian. Her passion for history and its teaching inspires her students ñ who have the kind of enthusiasm for her that only the finest teachers arouse in their students. Her impact upon the profession, through her leadership role in the History Teachersí Association of NSW, has been highly significant. Jennifer harnesses her powers of personality, intellectual acumen, and thoroughness of preparation in a highly impressive way.
Ms Joanna Lightfoot
Joanna is a highly organised, insightful and energetic teacher. She is constantly reflecting on her own practice and is committed to refining and developing her understanding of children and their learning. The students she teaches, both in her Year 1 classroom and within the multi-age investigation program she leads, have certainly benefited from her innovative professionalism and the warmth and enthusiasm that characterise her work.
Ms Jodi Robinson
Jodi is a teacher of Visual Arts at the school and is part of a very motivated and dedicated Art Department. She aims to lift the profile of Visual Arts within the school and the wider community and to develop and nurture a value and respect for art, and careers in the creative arts. It is this philosophy that has inspired numerous special arts projects that have led to amazing success for the students at the school.
Ms Julie Lewin
Julie Lewin has taught Bioscience at ACU since 1993. Her early nursing background involved her in choosing to work in extreme and demanding environments, from a primitive jungle ëhospitalí to one of the most technically advanced and progressive intensive care units in the world. After her return from Africa, she completed her HSC and BSc as a mature-age student and, in 1996, a Masters degree in Cognitive Science. Her colleagues regard her as a leader of teaching, known for her innovation and her generosity in sharing her insights and expertise.
Ms Kay Kanaar
Kay is a Head Teacher of English and Communication at the Illawarra Institute. She believes that a great influence in her teaching career was when she joined a team of dedicated and innovative teachers in her very first appointment in a High School. This happened again when she joined TAFE where she has had very supportive head teachers and deans to guide her and encourage her to achieve excellence. She also firmly believes that the most positive aspect of her teaching career has been the students she has had the privilege of knowing. Going above and beyond the expected is a daily goal for Kay who is inspirational in her ability to engage studentsí attention.
Ms Kim Sutherland
Kim is Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts at the school. She believes that the performing arts can provide students with life-altering experiences and tries to develop in children the desire to think deeper, look further, imagine the possibilities. ìI believe students should feel empowered by their learning.î An Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Kim in 1998 recognising her contribution to Education in NSW. She was also selected as one of four finalists in the Newcastle division of Energy Australiaís Community Spirit Awards in 1997.
Ms Kveta Milena Spalding
Kveta established the pilot project for Early Childhood Special Education in 1985 and has been the teacher of this area of education for about 17 years. Her passion is about ensuring that the needs of children with disabilities are met. Each year brings new challenges in a field of education where energy and enthusiasm are essential in encouraging children to reach their full potential. She works with a range of teachers and parents across a variety of school settings to provide a very effective transition program for Early Intervention students in Kindergarten.
Ms Leesa Merifield
Leesa is the Relieving Deputy Principal and teacher of a regional class for gifted and talented students. She has a great love of teaching and she never considered other options. She has been very positively influenced by the Principals of the schools in which she taught. Her credo is ìmaking a difference Öby being your bestî emphatically drives her every professional move. She regards the winning of this award as a confirmation that she is achieving her own goals and her personal best to enable her to í make a difference.

Margaret's intellectual and practical art-making qualities, combined with a dynamic classroom atmosphere, create a charged and positive learning environment. Ms Nicole Power
Nicoleís journey to become a teacher began in 1983, after spending a week at a school during a work experience program. She loved spending each day with the children, watching them learn and seeing the wonderful relationship they had with their teacher. Her colleagues spoke openly about her dedication, boundless enthusiasm, outstanding organisational skills, aptitude and adaptability towards the varying learning styles of her students. Students see Ms Power as a friend.
