Schools, and teachers as professionals, are facing the challenge of creating different ways to meet the current and future needs of students and communities.

In 2004 an Education Queensland district commenced a PLOT (Professional Learning Online Tool) Pilot Program with 14 schools. The schools engaged in a shared learning journey, with each individual school designing professional learning, using PLOT strategies and resources, that met systemic and school needs. The authors, in their roles as Executive Director Schools and Principal Advisor: Education Reform, played a key role in leading and facilitating this district initiative.

A follow-up review in 2005 (D'Arcy & Healy, 2006) indicated that the schools involved found PLOT useful in developing:

  • whole school cultural change
  • school improvement
  • implementation of systemic priorities
  • development of professional learning communities, within and across schools
  • development of leadership teams and leadership density
  • professional learning and pedagogical change
  • development of professional relationships.

Our research confirms that PLOT has the capacity to be a central platform for supporting a school's learning culture and agenda, irrespective of size of school or complexity of issues.
