School education in Australia is now largely organised around concepts of self-managing schools. Intersections exist between local school management, the integration into teaching and learning of information and communication technologies (ICT), and professional learning. Most professional learning concerning ICT by teachers is undertaken at school, which points to the importance of school leaders being well-versed in current theories and practices about the place of ICT in teaching and learning. At the same time however, the literature also points out that in the past, issues specifically facing school leaders have tended not to be included in ICT professional learning activities organised systemically. Drawing on the outcomes from the national Leadership and Learning with ICT research project, this paper discusses some emerging issues concerning professional learning for both teachers and school leaders and proposes some approaches to improving the workplace ICT capacity of educators.
