Problem-based learning (PBL) has attracted attention as an approach to professional development in a variety of occupational settings such as health and education. To date, however, there are few reports in the literature where PBL experiences have been 'delivered' to participants via the internet, particularly for educational leaders. The potential advantages of such an approach particularly for those in geographically isolated locations are significant allowing participants to interact and learn collaboratively with colleagues working in a variety of other sites.

This paper reports on a "leadership development on-line" module that implemented these ideas for educational leaders and potential leaders in Queensland, Australia. It outlines the underpinning principles of the module, explores the potential of the strategy used in the module as a professional development facility for school leaders, and offers suggestions for future directions for similar initiatives.
