A landmark government report entitled the National Review of School Music Education was released in November 2005. The Review investigated the present state of music in schools in Australia. It was acknowledged that music is important and can have a positive influence on a student. The Review found that even though there are some excellent music programmes, there is a great variability in the quality and delivery of music education in schools. Music teachers also need greater support in the delivery of the subject. The future of music education in schools is in the hands of policy makers, curriculum writers, universities, schools and educators. The paper will discuss the findings of the Review and will discuss pertinent issues.
