This article defines e‑Learning as learning in which information and communications technology (ICT) features as either medium and/or content. It describes trends in e‑Learning and discusses the implications for teacher education and professional development. Three essential elements for the effective use of ICT are demonstrated in the case study of NSW Adult Migrant English Service (NSW AMES) teachers' professional agendas in e‑Learning: the teachers' commitment, the development of teachers' knowledge and skills base, and the situating of professional learning/development in the context of real activities.
