Sunday Age journalist Natalie Craig will be presented the Australian College of Educators 2011 Victorian Media Award at the state Annual General Meeting on Thursday where she will also be the guest speaker.
Ms Craig was named the award winner in September for a series of stories on the Teach for Australia program. In her speech Ms Craig will describe her experiences of writing about the early days of the Teach for Australia program in 2009 and suggest a strategy for the recruitment of teachers in Australia based on her observations.
Victorian branch president of ACE, Ms Annette Rome, said the ACE media award recongnises the contribution of the media and journalism to community understanding of developments in education, affecting students and schools.
"Natalie Craig has provided great service to teachers and the education community through raising the profile of educational developments affecting the schools sector, engaging with and analysing issues and encouraging the education sector to participate in the wider debate on national issues that vitally affect schools," Ms Rome said.
"Media has an increasingly significant role in informing the community about key issues in education and in reflecting on achievements and we look forward to hearing Ms Craig's views on teacher recruitment based on her observations of the Teach for Australia program."
Natalie Craig is a feature writer and general reporter for the Sunday Age and M Magazine. During six years with The Age, Ms Craig was an education reporter, sub-editor and writer for the business and property sections of the paper.
The Victorian branch AGM takes place at Methodist Ladies College, Kew on Thursday 10 November.
